The Gnome Who Came Back Up

Old stories say gnomes live beneath the earth, guarding what is precious and coming up only at night to tend the gardens of people who treat them kindly.

One gnome stayed underground too long. The tunnels grew dark, the old work dried up, and he forgot the feel of the sun.

When he finally climbed out, in a valley of gorges and waterfalls, he expected every door to close.

Instead he found a small crew working in a community garden. No one asked where he had been. Someone handed him a trowel and said, “We could use you for two hours.”

He came back the next week, and the next. He mended a fence for the food pantry, sorted seed packets at the hardware store, and learned the name of everyone on the crew.

The treasure gnomes had always guarded, he realized, was never gold. It was being needed.

Now he keeps watch over everyone who helps that garden grow. When you see him on a badge, it means you are part of his crew.
